New York beginnings
Language, city life, and an enduring sense of wonder.
Anne was born and raised on Staten Island, New York City’s “forgotten borough,” where her fascination with metaphysical questions began. She has called Greenwich Village home for many years. After Stuyvesant High School, she studied English at the University of Virginia.
Her path through publishing and education has been characteristically varied: writer and editor in children’s educational and entertainment media; copy editor and proofreader for magazines and books; project coordinator in an experimental New York City public-school classroom; and, among other memorable jobs, personal assistant to a celebrated folk musician and concession-stand manager at an Off-Broadway theater.
Those lives around the edges of the page inform her work: observant, humane, open to surprise, and interested in the questions people carry with them.

Anne loves strong coffee, independent movie theaters, sandpipers, small children, and expanding her consciousness—not exclusively or necessarily in that order. She is happiest by the water and writes and plays whenever she can at the Jersey Shore.
